What I love most about working at Rice Elementary:
A great perk of being the music teacher is that I get to know each and every student. I see them grow each year and watch their personalities emerge. One of my favorite things to see is when students are playing music games on the playground. The development of community within a group of students, the musicianship that is cultivated, and the joy of playing while learning are some of the best parts of my job. And of course being able to listen to the expressiveness and purity of children singing—nothing beats that!
Favorite Children’s Book/Author:
The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein and Sing, Pierrot, Sing, by Tomie Depaola
Reading historical fiction, hiking, running, singing with friends, playing guitar, watching movies, travelling, swing dancing, contra-dancing, slack lining, making crafts, and being with friends and family.
A little more about me:
Despite Windsor being my hometown, I spent the first 11 years of my life in the deep south of Vicksburg, Mississippi. While it was a great place to grow up, I definitely prefer the Rocky Mountains and the Colorado weather. The best place I ever visited was a little village in Switzerland called Gimmelwald, where the enormous Swiss Alps were right outside my window! I first decided to be a music teacher after observing and being inspired by Sue Loucks, the music teacher at Grandview in Windsor, during my Thanksgiving break as a freshman in college. I spent a day in her classroom and afterwards said to myself, “This is what I want to do!” I spent five years at CSU, earning my degree in music education with a concentration in voice and completed my master’s degree soon after. I love being with my family, and I am so thankful to have such wonderful people in my life. My husband and I just had our first baby.
